Another Cold :(

January 5, 2012

I have now learned that when new teeth come in, Carter gets sick. There is NOTHING worse than a sick baby. His pain of an ear ache, diarrhea, excessive drooling, biting, and crankiness from his teething is now paired with a runny nose and cough. Sad. I stayed home from work today to take him to take him to the doctor and to give him some tlc. The doc said that colds are common with teething because of the frequent hand to mouth movements they make to alleviate teething pain.

I wish I could make him feel better. His puppy dog eyes look up at me with no sparkle and he attempts a Carter smile but falls short. I took to Twitter to ask some moms to see what they do to make their little ones feel better. I got the same answer over and over again. Vick’s Plugins and Vick’s Baby Rub . The plugin is a waterless vaporizer that comes with a nightlight and lasts 8 hours. It is $8 at Walgreens and includes 4 refills. For the Vick’s Vapor Rub for Babies, every mom said the same thing. “Rub it on their feet and put socks on top.” Well I just put Carter to sleep in his room with his plugin and will see in the morning if it helped at all with his congestion. I couldn’t find the Vick’s Vapor Rub for babies so will try again tomorrow and update. I have also been using a humidifier and I think that is helping.

LESSON LEARNED: Babies are likely to get sick when they are teething.

Casey, I am so sorry that Carter is sick 😦 I too hate when Chayce gets colds because they are so miserable! He had a cold for the whole month of December so I just went through this…vicks on the feet with socks is excellent! Also rub a little on his chest and a little under his nose when he goes to bed. Make sure that you are sucking his nose out with the bulb and saline before bed even though its so pitiful because they hate it. With Chayce I elevate his head with a pillow when he sleeps but I think Carter is a little too small for that (unless he is in your bed) so you can try some books or something to elevate the crib. Milk seems to thicken their mucous so try not to give it to him before bed….try water or warm apple juice. Warm liquids seem to break down the mucous a little better. Good luck Momma…let me know if you have any more questions!

Thank you Brittany! This is all great. I have to get some of that rub you all are talking about! Also I do give him milk right before he goes to bed so I will def change that routine. Carter moves so much throughout the night that elevating his head is pointless. He seriously goes from one corner to the other and back again! Thanks for your help!
