The Face Grabber

November 15, 2011

It started out soo sweet. It would usually be in the mornings when Carter would roll over and look at me with those big beautiful blue eyes and gently pat my face as if to say “Good morning Mommy!” Then slowly he started squishing my cheeks and grabbing my nose.

Once he figured this move out, he quickly learned to dig his fingernails in, grab, and then twist all over my face. It really hurts! And its not just in the mornings anymore. It’s during the day too. And probably the worst is at around 3am when he comes in our bed from his crib and right when I get him all snuggled in with me, he starts grabbing, twisting and pulling. He gets a hold of my bottom lip and just pulls. It is very hard to go to sleep with that.  Plus, I’m thinking this is not good for my aging process either.

This morning he started in on my eyes. Poking and smashing his hands into them. I can’t seem to find out how long this phase lasts but I did find it is very common at this age. I also did some research on why the face grabbing happens now. Some say it is your baby’s way of showing appreciation for you. Some say it is at this age when they start to realize you both are separate beings and becomes fascinated by this idea. I’ve also read that at 6 months babies begin to understand cause and effect and he us enjoying my reaction when he face grabs.

It is probably a little bit of all of those things. But, I personally think Carter is realizing he can touch my face and feel it move. It is interesting to him. He does this with other people as well, however he is mostly fascinated with my face. That is a little flattering!

LESSON LEARNED: Watch out for the mommy face grabbing at 6 months!
