Baby’s First Teeth- Product Review

October 31, 2011

Carter now has two beautiful tiny teeth! I am in no way a teething expert, but I did learn a few things that worked and didn’t work for Carter. I also learned that Carter had a different reaction with each tooth. With his first tooth, he nursed a lot the days prior. This was similar to when he has his growth spurts. Then he was fussy for one evening. The next day, he had a tooth. The second tooth was a weekend process. I am so glad it happened over the weekend so we got to be with him all day through his pain. It looks like it hurts so much and it just breaks my heart.

The number one thing I learned, and this will be this entry’s lesson, is that there is nothing you can do to make the pain go away. There are only things you can do to temporarily ease the pain. Nothing lasts forever.

Here are 5 products that I tried with Carter and my review of them. In no particular order.

1- Baby Orajel. They have this new natural version that we tried. It defiantly works immediately. The only down side is that it doesn’t last long at all. We put his pacifier in right after and it still only gives us maybe a 5 minute crying break (which you and your baby might desperately need). It works by numbing the gums. It is funny when they get it on their tongue and make funny faces!

2- Hyland’s Teething Tablets. These worked great. Like the Orajel, it works immediately. These natural tablets are dissolved under the tongue. I hate to say it, but if you save this idea for last when your baby is having a fit, they will go to sleep so quick! They are so relieved the pain is gone, they pass out. I say this because again, it doesn’t last long. If you can get your baby’s pain to ease enough so they can sleep, they will feel better when they wake up.

3-Teething Rings. This might just be Carter specific, but he doesn’t care for the cold teething rings at all. Especially the harder plastic ones. He kind of liked the old school soft plastic teething ring with the toy inside to chew on but more for entertainment, not pain relief. With the teething rings that are not cold, like the Nuby, were also more for entertainment. He liked the bright colors and holding it, but it did nothing for his pain.

4-Sofie the Giraffe. Carter has been a huge fan of Sofie since he was able to chew on something. This toy is made in France from 100% natural rubber. She has a cute little story to go along with her. While at first I thought $22 was ridiculous for a plain giraffe toy, I soon learned the genius behind it. Carter loves the taste of the rubber and loves to make her squeak. She worked to soothe his gums but only when he wasn’t having a full-blown pain attack. I would say Sofie is a must have toy for teething as well as just playing.

5- Gripe Water. This natural , alcohol-free remedy is more for the upset tummy that comes with teething. When baby’s teeth they make so much saliva. Too much ingested saliva can cause a lot of gas and tummy pain. Just like with the teething tablets, sometimes Carter would do straight to sleep after the pain eased. This stuff is awesome for newborns too who have gas problems.

Some other ideas I found online or through friends that I didn’t get a chance to try are : clove oil, wooden teething rings or a wooden spoon, and a special raspberry shaped pacifier. Feel free to comment if you have any other products or ideas that worked for you.

LESSON LEARNED: When a baby is teething, there is nothing that you can do to stop the pain. You can only temporarily ease the pain.

Good luck! I heard from a couple people about the tablets too and decided to try them out. Amazing! Also, Sofie has been with us since Carter was about 2 months old. He has always loved her and I know Bre will too.
