Vaccination Confusion

August 31, 2011

Let me start by saying I have no medical background. I have only information from research and a mothers instinct. I’ve never been more confused over anything so important. I feel like a lot of mothers must be going through the same struggle. There is 1) Information you get from your doctor 2) What everyone else says which conflicts with what doctors saying. You want the best for your child and to protect them from harmful diseases, but does that come at the price of risking potential allergic reactions, brain damage or death? In an answer, yes.

I get very annoyed when doctors say that those side effects are rare. Is that supposed to make me feel better that 1 in 10,000 have a severe allergic reaction? There is no reason why my child can’t be that one; someone’s child has to be. I completely get that vaccinations are so important for my child and my community. But it is hard for me to want to inject my healthy baby with potentially harmful vaccines. And don’t get me started on how many they chose to give at one time!

I have held off on getting vaccines so far. At my 4 month doctors appointment I knew I was going to hear it from my doctor. He had given me a list at my last appointment that explained the vaccination schedule. What I didn’t realize at first is that some of the vaccinations listed were actually multiple. Yes I have read that a child has a strong immune system that can handle many diseases at once. There just seems to be something so wrong with giving them 8 vaccines in one day. By six months of age, most U.S. children have received about 18 inoculations containing 24 vaccines against nine diseases. Over the next two years or so, they will receive another nine shots containing 14 vaccines against 12 diseases.

Then of course, there is Autism. Doctors will make you feel stupid if you even ask. They will swear to you that there is no connection between the amount of vaccinations or the MMR vaccination, and Autism. But how can you deny the thousands of parent’s stories recalling that right after their child has received a vaccine, they saw their child disappear. The stories are heartbreaking. Just thinking about it gives me chills. How can doctors simply deny so many occurences? -side note I am moving Carter to another practice that will honor the vaccination schedule I set for my son.-

Here are some interesting, conflicting sites to check out.

Here is site discrediting the link between MMR and Autism. http://www.cnn.com/2011/HEALTH/01/05/autism.vaccines/index.html
Here is one reinforcing the link between MMR and Autism. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31727_162-20049118-10391695.html (an amazingly interesting article by the way.) and one more, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-kirby/autism-vaccine-_b_817879.html . This one is from a mother of a child with Autism who vaccinates. http://www.blogher.com/my-child-has-autism-and-i-vaccinate There are so many great sites out there with information. The problem is, is this information is conflicting.

There is so much I don’t know and so many questions. It seems that for every answer I find either another question, or a conflicting answer. Personally I don’t know what I am going to do yet. So far I have gone ahead and gotten him the Rotavirus and the Pneumoccal vaccination. These did not have side effects of brain damage. I do want to vaccinate Carter. Of course I want to protect him from harmful diseases. I, like most other parents out there, just need more answers on how to do this the safest way. The only factual website I found for side effects is http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/. I would love to hear from other mothers/parents on what you think and what your plans are.
