Dr. Seuss Knew His Shit

July 23, 2011

Being that I am an avid book reader and have been all my life, I couldn’t wait to start reading some of my childhood favorites to Carter.

About a week or two after bringing Carter home from the hospital I finally felt rested enough for my eyes to focus on reading. I created a pile of books and snuggled in to our rocking chair with Carter. The second I started reading he began to cry. He would continue to do this until he was about 2 and a half months old. I couldn’t get him interested.

I am a stubborn Taurus so I kept trying until my persistence finally paid off. I was surprised that the book that sparked his interest was Dr. Seuss’s Green Eggs and Ham. Carter fell in love with the rhyming story. He even loves the pictures. That is strange to me since there isn’t much use of color and not much detail to the scribbled cartoons of Sam I Am and…come to think of it, they never mention the other guys name. I think it is the repetition of the rhyming words that makes Carter love the book. I read that book to him everyday. He now recognizes the bright orange cover and knows what’s coming.

This wonderful discovery has slowly opened doors for other books as well. I’d say his second favorite is The Cat In The Hat. So it seems Dr. Seuss knew his shit.

LESSON LEARNED: Read Dr. Seuss to you baby and be rewarded.
